What is a Reformed Church?

A Reformed church is a church founded upon the great principles of the Reformation of the 16th and 17th centuries when the Church rediscovered the great essential truths of the Scriptures which had been hidden under the traditions of men. These were
1) The Scriptures alone as the Church's all sufficient manual for doctrine and practice. With the completion of God's revelation in the sixty six books of the Bible at the end of the first century we are to look for no further revelation from the Lord, the Scriptures being God's final word to mankind containing all things necessary for salvation, life and church order.

2) Christ alone as the way of reconciliation to God. All that God required in order to pardon, restore and bless man with eternal life has been accomplished by His incarnate Son, Jesus Christ. The sacrificial offering of the Lord Jesus Christ needs no supplementing by any ritual, rite or work of any. 'It is finished' was His cry of victory from the cross and nothing else needs to be done.

3) Grace alone follows on from the preceding comments regarding salvation by Christ. Salvation is a free gift of God and cannot be earned or merited. We must come humbly, reverently and penitently to Christ the Saviour and seek His mercy and forgiveness. Any attempt to earn salvation will result in abject failure and everlasting destruction away from the presence of the Lord of life and glory.

4) Faith alone as the only means of receiving the salvation God in mercy offers to guilty sinners. For by grace are ye saved through faith... see Ephesians 2 v 8. This means we need to know, believe and trust in Christ as our Mediator and Saviour.
